(1998). BRJFLST consists of two parts: Vocabulary Subscale and Chinese Character Pronunciation Subscale. The present paper reviews vocabulary parts consisting of 470 items. Items were reviewed from the viewpoints of Japanese language education as first language. Three levels of category were set for the purpose of evaluation: Level A as the 'considerably stable in the sense of meaning and social significance over time', Level B as 'fairly stable in the sense of meaning and social significance over time, frequently quoted as test items' and Level C as `limited use in daily life or confusing distracters'. Each level was divided into two to four categories according to other criteria mainly set from the viewpoints of usage and exposure in the testing situations. The result showed that 71% of items were classified into level A, while only 5.6% were evaluated as level C.
