内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 To elucidate the geologic development of the Ou Backbone Ranges, the writer investigated the stratigraphy and geologic structure of the Neogene System in the area along the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. Stratigraphy of the Neogene and Quaternary systems in this area is summarized in Fig. 5. From the viewpoint of geologic development, the Neogene System of this area is classified into five stages ; the Yonnosawa, Okunikkawa-Arasawa, Sakunami, Hikage, and Shirasawa stages, in ascending order. The Yonnosawa and the lower half of the Okunikkawa-Arasawa stages may be the Lower Miocene, the upper half of the Okunikkawa-Arasawa. Sakunami, and Hikage stages are thought to be the Middle Miocene, and the Shira-sawa stage is perhaps the Upper Miocene. The lowest Neogene stage in this area, the Yonnosawa stage consists of andesitic pyroclastics deposited on land or under shallow marine conditions. These rocks have been extensively subjected to hydrothermal alteration of later phase of development and are changed to propyrite or propyritic lithoidal tuff breccia. The Okunikkawa-Arasawa stage is characterized by the products of intense subaqueous dacitic or rhyolitic volcanism which is estimated to have occurred in an extensional stress field with E - W trend. These pyroclastics also suffered hydrothermal alteration to be green colored. The tuffaecous siltstone interbedded in the upper part of this stage yielded the flora comparative to the Kuromori Flora in the Aizu District. Under the influence of weakened volcanism and progress in marine transgression, the siltstone and sandstone of the Sakunami stage were deposited. Planktonic microfossils from these marine sediments indicate a correlation with the lower half of the Hatatate Formation in the Sendai district. Based on benthonic foraminiferal evidence, the water depth of the sedimentary basin of this stage was inferred as sublittoral to upper bathyal. During the deposition of the Hikage stage, the central part of the Ou backbone Ranges began to uplift and a geanticlinal zone was formed in the basin. This stage corresponds to the Blow's Zone N11-N12 (Blow, 1969) on the basis of planktonic foraminifera from the Hikage Formation. Probably in the Late Miocene, upheaval of the Backbone Ranges was accelerated and terrestrial acidic volcanism around them provided the Shirasawa stage with pyroclastic meterials. The major geologic structures in the present area are two broad anticlinoria planging northwestwards in echelon in the central part. These anticlinoria are bent with projection toward east at a location to the west of Kawasaki-machi, Miyagi Prefecture. The folded rocks are bounded on the east by a reverse fault trending nearly in north-south direction along the eastern border of the Backbone Ranges. This fault is also bent accordingly to the bent anticlinoria. There is a high-angle normal fault extending transverse to these anticlinoria in NW-SE direction, and the distribution of the pyroclastics of the Shirasawa stage in the eastern part is considered to be controled by this fault. The rocks of the present area have been affected by tectonic forces. Producing the major geologic structure mentioned above, two movements are remarkable. The first one com-menced during the deposition of the Hikage stage and formed the zone of upheaval trending in N - S direction in the central part. This movement reached its maximum phase when the reverse fault bounding the eastern side of the Backbone Ranges appeared in the Quaternary. The second one is represented by NW-SE trending normal faulting across the Backbone Ranges accompanied by intense acidic volcanism which characterized the Shirasawa stage.
